Calhoun State Prison Overview
Calhoun State Prison is operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections. GDC identifies it as a medium-security state prison for adult male felons. It is physically located in Morgan, in Calhoun County, but it is not a county jail, not a sheriff booking desk, and not a place where local arrestees are usually processed immediately after arrest. People housed there are in state prison custody after sentencing and classification, or otherwise under GDC authority.
This distinction matters for every lookup and family task. The county jail phone is the right first call for a person arrested locally and held before trial. Calhoun State Prison inmate records are searched through the statewide GDC offender query. The GDC system may show state identity numbers, institution history, offense details, conviction county filters, sentence status, and photos when available. It is not the same as the Calhoun County Jail roster, and it should not be used as proof that a person is currently in local pretrial custody.
Calhoun State Prison Capacity
GDC publishes a capacity of 1,677 for Calhoun State Prison. The same facility page lists medium security, construction in 1993, opening in 1994, and renovation in 2008. The research did not locate an official current daily population for the individual prison, so the stat block uses the capacity that GDC publishes and does not invent a current headcount. That capacity is far larger than the Calhoun County Jail capacity reported by the Georgia Sheriffs' Association, which is why Calhoun County inmate population discussions must separate local jail population from state prison capacity.
GDC's housing description is unusually specific. The prison has nine housing units, with each unit described as having 24 triple-bunked cells and 24 double-bunked cells. It also has eight open dormitories with a total of 480 beds and 95 segregation or isolation cells. GDC lists open dormitory, faith-based dormitory, double-cell, and triple-cell housing types, plus a C.E.R.T. Team and Fire Station. Segregation or isolation means a separate housing status used for security, discipline, protection, or other institutional reasons, not a separate public lookup system.
Calhoun State Prison Lookup
Use GDC Find an Offender for Calhoun State Prison. The direct query form allows name searching and more detailed filters, including Most Recent Institution. The institution list includes Calhoun State Prison. It also includes Calhoun County Jail as a state database filter, but that does not turn the state database into the sheriff's live booking roster. For a sentenced state prisoner, the GDC search is the correct channel. For a person just arrested locally, the county jail remains the first custody check.
- Open the GDC offender query and accept the disclaimer if it appears.
- Search by last name and first name first, using partial last-name search if the exact spelling is uncertain.
- Add filters such as age, race, gender, conviction county, or Most Recent Institution when results are too broad.
- Select Calhoun State Prison in the institution filter when the goal is to confirm a state prisoner housed at this prison.
- Use GDC ID Number or case number if family, counsel, or court records provide one.
The GDC FAQ says transfer dates are not published for security reasons. A person recently sentenced from a Calhoun County case may not appear at a permanent institution right away, or the location may change after reception and classification. If the GDC locator does not return the person, check name spelling, search both active and inactive offenders, and confirm the court sentence or custody route through the clerk or GDC contact channel. For a local booking before conviction, use the county jail record path instead.
Calhoun State Prison Contact
GDC publishes both a physical address and a separate mail address for Calhoun State Prison. Use the physical address for facility location and directions. Use the prison mail address for correspondence that GDC accepts by mail, after confirming the required inmate name and identification format. The prison phone reaches the facility, while public records for GDC files are routed through the GDC Open Records process rather than the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.

Calhoun State Prison Visits
GDC publishes state-prison visitation rules for Calhoun State Prison. Visits are listed for Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visitors must be approved before scheduling. GDC says the visitor must submit an Application for Visitation Privileges to the facility, and approved visitors then schedule through the online visitation portal. Scheduling for that week's visits opens Monday at 5:00 a.m. and closes Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Visits are limited to one session per visitation day and no more than two hours.
| Day | Hours | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | Approved and scheduled GDC visit |
| Sunday | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | Approved and scheduled GDC visit |
| State holidays | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | State-prison holiday visitation |
| Scheduling window | Monday 5:00 a.m. to Wednesday 5:00 p.m. | For that week's visitation |
| Visit length | No more than two hours | One session per visitation day |
GDC statewide rules allow up to four visitors at one time, subject to approval and facility controls. Bring required identification and follow the prison's dress, property, child visitor, and conduct rules. A local jail visit rule from Calhoun County Jail should not be applied here, and GDC approval for a state prison visit does not create approval for county jail visitation.
Calhoun State Prison Money
Calhoun State Prison uses GDC's statewide family and offender support systems. GDC identifies Securus as the phone provider for offender calls. Calls may be monitored or recorded, call forwarding and three-way calling are not permitted, and calls are limited to 25 minutes. Phone numbers must be on the offender's approved call list. For deposits, GDC publishes money order, JPay, MoneyGram, and phone channels. State prison deposits require the sender to be on the approved visitor list, so money access is tied to GDC approval rules rather than a county jail lobby process.
| Method | Fee / limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Money order voucher | Free | Allow up to two weeks for mail and processing |
| JPay online, mobile, or IVR | $0.01-$20: $3.50; $20.01-$100: $5.00; $100.01-$300: $6.50 | GDC published fee tiers |
| MoneyGram | Up to $5,000: $4.95 | Receiver code Georgia DOC 6857 |
| Phone deposit | Fees per channel | GDC lists (800) 574-5729 |
| Lockbox or money order | Free | Follow the GDC voucher process |
For mail, use the prison mail address and confirm the required offender name and GDC number format before sending anything. GDC institutional security rules may affect publications, packages, photos, legal mail, and rejected items. For GDC records, use the GDC Open Records portal instead of routing state prison records to the county sheriff.
Calhoun State Prison Intake
Calhoun State Prison does not perform ordinary street-arrest booking for Calhoun County. A typical local criminal case starts with arrest and jail booking, then court action, prosecutor review, and sentencing if the case results in a prison term. After a state sentence, GDC handles transfer, reception, classification, housing assignment, and institution placement. Classification means the prison system reviews custody, risk, medical, program, and housing factors before assigning a person to a facility or unit.
A GDC profile may show the most recent institution, offense and conviction information, state identifiers, status, physical descriptors, and a photo if available. It is still a public search result, not the complete prison file. GDC notes that institutional files, disciplinary reports, grievances, housing assignments, inmate phone and email information, and security classifications may involve exemptions or redactions when records are requested.
Calhoun State Prison Programs
GDC publishes a detailed program and work list for Calhoun State Prison. Academic offerings include GED, Adult Basic Education, literacy remedial work, correspondence courses, and English as a Second Language. Counseling and reentry programs include Family Violence, Motivation for Change, Re-Entry, Thinking for a Change, Moral Reconation Therapy, Sex Offender Psycho-Educational Program, Exodus Stronghold, Matrix Relapse Prevention, Matrix Early Recovery, Lifers Group, and Faith and Character Based Groups. Religious activities include worship services and faith-character programming.
Work details and on-the-job roles include Calhoun County, Georgia State Patrol, outside maintenance, outside warehouse, outside grounds, fire station, forklift, food service, horticulture, sanitation, building maintenance, barbering, education aide, library aide, laundry, grounds keeping, office clerk, and career clerk. Recent correctional news in the research involved Calhoun State Prison inmates in federal prosecutions, including fraud, money laundering, and drug trafficking allegations, but those items should not be treated as county jail misconduct or as proof about any current inmate's case.
